A progressive Mandarin immersion school
Presidio Knolls School was founded in 2008 on the idea that a progressive educational model can be combined with Mandarin immersion to create a vibrant, innovative school where children will thrive. We currently serve preschool, elementary school, and middle school students, with plans to add one grade each year until we are a full preK-8 school in Fall 2020.
The Presidio Knolls Mandarin immersion preschool program is steeped in the principles of our progressive mission. We believe children are full of curiosity and creativity, and our Reggio Emilia-inspired curriculum emerges from children’s ideas, thoughts, and observations. Through projects, song, dance, play, and art our students not only develop strong Mandarin skills, but also a firm foundation for elementary school and life. Our main goal in preschool is to cultivate a lifelong passion for learning and exploration.
Children are inspired by big ideas and are most engaged when facts are presented in context so they can see how seemingly disparate themes fit together. With that in mind, our progressive curriculum centers around four Units of Exploration (UoEs) that give students the chance to deeply explore a concept and that integrate English, Chinese, literacy, science, math, and social studies. Elementary school culminates with an optional trip to China where students can deepen and extend their academic work.
Middle school is a critical time of development for children, and immersion during these years is critical for bilingualism and biculturalism. At PKS, we believe the middle school years should be joyful, challenging, and transformative. Our middle school students engage in rigorous, collaborative, hands-on learning in both Mandarin and English that includes extensive exploration off campus and outside of San Francisco, with yearly trips to China so they can authentically use their language skills.
PKS is fully accredited for grades PK-6 by the Accrediting Commission for Schools,
Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
