How to Apply
PKS is built on a shared mission and vision for our children - to be bilingual, bicultural global citizens who are curious, compassionate, creative, and collaborative.
Our admissions process aims to give applicant families a sense of who we are and what the experience of learning in a progressive Mandarin immersion environment feels like.
We welcome your questions at any time - just email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or call us at (415) 202-0770.

Applying to Presidio Knolls
Our application process differs slightly based on the incoming grade level of the applicant.
Join us for a small group tour that will give you a chance to explore the campus and see a class in session. Once you complete and submit the inquiry form you will receive links to register for a parent tour and Open House.
There will also be optional Saturday open houses if you’d like to meet other prospective parents, hear from current families, and meet additional PKS staff.
If you decide that PKS is a good fit for your child and family, complete the online application which can be found here. Please call or email the admissions office if the $100 application fee is a hardship for your family.
No Mandarin language skills are required for incoming preschool or kindergarten students, although we encourage families to apply at the preschool level if your child has no previous exposure to the language. We require Mandarin language skills for applicants for first grade and above.
If your are applying for grades 1-7, please send us your child’s previous school records. Please download either the PreK–1st Grade Teacher Evaluation Form or the 2nd Grade–8th Grade Teacher Evaluation Form. For applicants in Grades 3-7, please also download the Student Records Release Form. Evaluations can be mailed to our address or scanned and emailed to email@example.com.
Upon submission of your application, you will be sent a link to schedule the next step of the application process, which differs according to grade level as follows.
Preschool applicants are invited to join us for a 45-minute play date with other prospective students in January or February. These play dates take place in one of our preschool classrooms and give us a chance to see how your child interacts with other children, with teachers, and with the environment. Given space constraints, we ask that only one parent come to the play date with your child.
Kindergarten applicants meet one-on-one with an independent child development consultant for a 60-minute Kindergarten Readiness Assessment, which allows us to better understand your child’s academic, physical, and socio-emotional strengths. Assessments will be held at PKS from the end January through early February. Kindergarten applicants are also be asked to attend a classroom simulation on Saturday, January 12, where they will have a chance to meet teachers and to interact with similarly aged children in a classroom setting.
Grade 1-5 applicants
We will be in direct contact with you for more information on your child's individualized Mandarin, math, and reading assessments. Assessments dates are flexible and will be held in January and February. Elementary school applicants are also asked to attend a classroom simulation on Saturday, January 12, where they will have a chance to meet teachers and to interact with similarly aged children in a classroom setting.
As students transition from childhood to adolescence, they are learning to make their own decisions and form their own opinions. As such, we invite all middle school applicants to come and take a campus tour in January or February. This gives them a chance to meet teachers and potential peers while also getting a feel for the Presidio Knolls learning community. As part of their campus visit, applicants will be asked to have an informal conversation with a Mandarin teacher to assess familiarity with the language.
Middle school applicants are required to take the AAPPL to assess Mandarin fluency in the following modes of communication: Interpersonal Listening/Speaking, Presentational Writing, and Interpretive Reading and Listening. More information can be found here. Once the student has completed the campus visit and interview, the admissions office will email instructions on taking the AAPPL assessment.
This 30-minute conversation with a member of the leadership team, conducted between October and February, gives us a chance to meet with prospective parents individually so we can learn more about your family and answer any questions you may have.
