Dear PKS Community,
Welcome back from the Board of Trustees! In last weekend’s In the Knolls, you heard from the Parent Association about the important role they play at PKS. Today I’d like to share with you a bit more about the Board and our role.
The PKS Board is the guardian of our school’s mission. The focus of our work is long range and strategic: we serve as fiduciaries and stewards of the school’s financial health and institutional longevity. Our bios are here. We are working parents united in our commitment to PKS, honored to serve our school, and proud advocates of the institution our community is building.
Over the past nine years, the all-volunteer Board of Trustees has guided the launch of the K-8 program; deftly navigated the purchase of the school property; fundraised for and overseen three construction projects including the new 3-story U-Wing; and hired leaders in progressive, bilingual education.
As Chris has mentioned on numerous occasions, the community themes for this school year are connectedness, continuous improvement, and sustained inquiry. As you saw at Back to School night they are being incorporated into all facets of the curriculum and program in creative and exciting ways.
These themes are critical to the PKS Board of Trustees’ work as well. The board’s major initiative this year is the completion of a strategic planning process. In the spirit of continuous improvement and connectedness we will work with stakeholders to develop a five-year plan that will inspire the school to greater excellence and further refine our vision. This is a time for us to connect with parents, students, faculty, and staff to look deeply at the future of our school through a lens of sustained inquiry to ensure that we are building an innovative, rigorously progressive, Mandarin-immersion program for our current and future students.
We welcome your input, feedback, and any questions you may have on our governance and stewardship work (email us). As always, feedback and questions on operational or classroom matters may be directed to Chris, administrative staff, division heads, and teachers. We hope that you will roll up your sleeves and get involved in the school community: volunteer in your child's classroom, participate in a Parent Association committee, and make PKS your philanthropic priority. All of us — students, parents, teachers, and staff — are the lifeblood of this community!
Wishing you and your children a great school year. 加油, jia you!
Ranee Lan, Chair
on behalf of the Board of Trustees
